We live in an interdependent world and all of nature relies on our awareness of its fragility and our desire to preserve it. Wildlife artist Carolyn Whiteside Mitchell hopes that her paintings will serve as a medium through which others will become more aware of our delicate environment.

A native of Alabama, Carolyn is a graduate of Auburn University where she majored in commercial art. Her paintings have received recognition throughout the South, including awards in the Southern Wildlife Show, the Alabama Wildlife Federation, and the Alabama Duck Stamp Competition.

Her paintings have been exhibited every year in the Florida Wildlife Expo in Orlando since its inception in 1994.

Carolyn's paintings have been selected as designs on both Ducks Unlimited and Audubon Society Sportswear. Leanin' Tree has chosen several of her painting to use on their greeting cards. Over the past two decades Carolyn has studied with numerous wildlife masters including Robert Bateman and attended his Master Class at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin. She has over 25 of her paintings in either giclée or limited edition prints.

Carolyn and her husband Dixon live in Birmingham, Alabama on the banks of the Cahaba River. The endangered Cahaba Lily grows in the shoals of the river about 30 miles downstream from Birmingham. This beautiful flower has been the subject for many of her paintings. The Cahaba River is a natural ecosystem for hawks, raccoons, deer, turkey, eastern cottontails, hummingbirds and many varieties of songbirds that thrive in the surrounding woodland, and these have been the subject matter for a lot of her work.

Even though Carolyn has ample subject matter for wildlife paintings in her own backyard, she and her husband are avid campers, and she is always armed with her camera and sketch pad to record wildlife in its natural habitat. Destinations for many of these camping trips are our beautiful National Parks or the beaches of the Southwest and Florida where she spends a great deal of time studying nature scenes and wildlife to collect references for her paintings.
